Valerie Dively is Professor of Interpretation in the Department of Interpretation at Gallaudet University. Prior to her joining the interpretation faculty at Gallaudet as a full time faculty member in 1990, she had worked as a certified deaf interpreter, a deaf-blind interpreter and an ASL instructor in DC, VA and MD for 8 years. Now retired from interpreting practice, Dr. Dively has actively contributed to the field of interpretation as an interpreter educator for 18 years. She was instrumental in establishing the Department of Interpretation in 2003 and was the department's first chair. She also had served as the program coordinator of the MA in Interpretation program from 1998 to 2005. She co-authored the first set of major revisions (mid-1990s) and the second set of 2008 major revisions in the original MA curriculum in interpretation and the preparation of the new BA curriculum in interpretation in the department. She currently serves as the program coordinator of the BA in Interpretation program.

Dr. Dively is a US National Science Foundation researcher in the area of ASL and Tactile ASL sociolinguistic variation with a focus on function and sociolinguistic variation of several signs and indicators of a question. She is published in diverse fields including interpretation, translation studies, linguistics, and Deaf Native American studies. Dr. Dively was one of the speakers, including Her Excellency, the Ireland President Mary McAleese, for launching Trinity College and Gallaudet University's Fulbright Ireland Deaf Studies Scholarship at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in1999. She also served as the on-site Fulbright faculty advisor to three U.S. Fulbright scholars in Italy for the Italy and Gallaudet University Fulbright Scholarship Program in Deaf Studies in 2000. Additionally, she is trained as a new consultant on sea glass items in the areas of archaeology and anthropology.
